Editorial : From Booklist
The idea of a tie-in novel by a celebrity author is enough to make readers and reviewers alike cringe. The reality, however, is much more agreeable. The author played Angelique in the cult 1970s vampire TV show Dark Shadows and has subsequently acquired a very fair hand with characterization, pacing, and setting. Barnabas Collins himself has long returned to his coffin, and the Collins Parker’s David has fallen in love with is Jacqueline, a reincarnation of Angelique. The young couple is snatched up in a time warp that takes them back to Prohibition years, where they have to battle gangsters to hide Collins family secrets. Meanwhile, contemporary Collinwood has to fight the same battle against a snoopy and ruthless paranormal investigator. This probably will go over better with hardcore Dark Shadows fans, but there are a lot of them out there. --Roland Green
The cookbook contains many cross-references, for example, the meal plan gives page numbers (paper page numbers, not kindle locations) for the recipes it includes, but doesn't have a link to the recipes. He covers the pros and cons of flat wheels on flanged track versus flanged wheels on flat track, stone ties versus timber ties, steel rails versus iron rails, and all of the engineering issues that go into building a stable, long-lasting track--and that's just in the first few chapters.
From there he explains the economic issues that go into deciding where to run the track, how to route the trains, and everything that goes into establishing a railroad operation.
Finally he covers all the details: how a consist is put together; the various cars and their construction; the railroad workers and their various jobs.
This is one of the few books that leaves me feeling like I know
