The Purge of the Thirtieth Division

The Purge of the Thirtieth Division is the only known account by any of the eighteen National Guard division commanders mobilized in 1940 and 1941. Russell’s memoir provides not only a first-hand look into the training of National Guard units in preparation for World War II, but also offers a scathing indictment of the Army high command for unfair treatment of National Guard officers. Featuring commentary from a recently retired Army National Guard general, this republication of Russell’s privately printed memoir sheds new light on a controversial chapter of the U.S. Army as it prepared to enter the war.

EDITORIAL :

“Anyone interested in the political conflict between the Regular Army and the National Guard must read this book. It provides an interesting but biased opinion of the U.S. Army in 1940-41 that all military historians writing about the World War II period should read and consult."Journal of America’s Military Past

REVIEW :

After all, by the time we know the two main characters well, we realize there just aren't lots of options for them. Sexy brothers are sexy. Presently, I have 2 jobs working over 12 hrs a day. Aside from these important and fascinating details (which include the highly probable fact that Assing actually ghost-wrote some of Douglass's journalism in "The New National Era"), one of the great strengths of this book is that it places these personal matters in the larger framework of social and political conditions: the abolitionist movement, women's emancipation, the Civil War, Washington politics, the crusades for the Civil Rights amendments in the 1870s, and much more. This book was on the Wish List for the DAR Museum!! Need I say more?! The museum has an incredible collection of samplers. Also she uses a lot of Splenda. It’s a story that is about so many other things than what you may
